Probably played this more than anything else the last year or so.
Starting in 2016 and lasting through the venue's closing at the end of 2023, guitarist Jeff Parker played a weekly Monday residency at the Enfield Tennis Academy with his ETA IVtet. The consistent and familiar setting provided space for creative exploration for the musicians, who began by playing standards but quickly shifted to extended, slowly-evolving pieces. Their second double-album, The Way Out of Easy—four long pieces from a single concert in January, 2023—leans heavily into influences from the 1970s, with floating grooves reminiscent of spiritual jazz and prominent electronics loosely informed by early fusion. Recordist and gear designer Bryce Gonzales built a compact system that enabled him to capture these concerts with incredible fidelity, while fitting naturally in the ETA's modest space.
