Hi, new here but I have a question and wondered if savvypaul, or anyone else could help?

One Friday evening after work and I remembered my trip to the North West Audio Show in June and how much I liked the Cube 3 speakers. So as you do, I asked goggle and an eBay listing came up for:

NVA - Cube 3 - £250 delivered
Sealed box bookshelf speakers. No branding as these are possibly pre-production examples. Light wood cabinets in plywood, with original black grills.

So after a beer and at that price, I thought it would be daft not to take give them a try. I'm more than happy with the sound, so easy to listen to and I like how they look in my living room. But I wonder exactly what are they, are they prototypes? They are 30cm square, so bigger than both production Cube 2 and 3s, was a larger size considered and ultimately rejected? Any history or back story on them would be much apricated.

Cheers

Sam

I had to look it up in my emails, they are Van Damme 6mm.

Shame to hear the speakers are a knock off. I'll have to think about getting the real things some time soon.

On a slightly different note, what were the feet that the Cubes sat on during the North West Audio Show?

We were given a set of Stack Auvas to try out. Other isolation feet will do the same job for much less outlay, though.

Are you certain these are DIY Cubes? I once owned a very early pair of Cube1's which were plywood built, then lacquered. I checked with the Doc, and he confirmed they were early production Cubes.

Know more than you?....That I doubt! However, the wooden Cubes sounded fine, and were bought from me via the Hifisubjectivist.org site by someone whom I can't remember. Everything looks the same as your photos.... speaker connections, speaker dressing etc. Just not lacquered. I just can't think why anyone would do a DIY on a pair of relatively unknown speakers. Just saying.

I found this on a 2016 The Audio Standard forum about the price of NVA Cubettes. Your Cube1's are of the same build as the Cubettes, just bigger!

Your 'DIY' Cubes are the real thing. That is early NVA speakers as available 10+ years ago.

Cubette prices:

Unfinished - raw plain wood - is £250pr

Finished off (painted), they are £300pr.

I have Cubettes in the second system where space is limited. They do not have the bass depth and authority of the larger Cubes but the sound signature is the same and they sound very nice.

The Cubettes are (a lot) smaller than the pair posted by the OP - his are 30cm, same as Cube 1s.
