R.I.P. actor Joe Don Baker, aged 89.

I first became aware of him playing the part of CIA agent Darius Jedburgh in the absolutely brilliant BBC series Edge of Darkness (1985).

RIP, a very underrated guitarist, Rick Derringer. He performed with Edgar Winter, but first found fame as a member of the McCoys, and was on their major hit, Hang On Sloopy. From the McCoys, he moved on to "Johnny Winter And," hopping between the brothers' bands. He also released some great solo albums throughout his career, including the great "Guitars And Women" in 1979. Rick also played guitar on a couple of Steely Dan tracks: "Show Biz Kids" on Countdown to Ecstasy (1973) and "Chain Lightning" on Katy Lied (1975). There were many more strings to Rick's bow, and you can read about them here...

As an aside, I did see Edgar Winter live, back in '72, but that was just before Rick joined the band. Ronnie Montrose was on guitar that day.

Peter Easterby, Yorkshire-based racehorse trainer, died yesterday, aged 95.

He trained National Hunt winners of the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Champion Hurdle plus many winners on the flat. RIP.

Best-selling novelist, Frederick Forsyth, author of "Day Of The Jackal" died yesterday aged 86.

I have read several of his books. I thought the earlier ones were his best. RIP.

He lived two or three miles from me.
