Speakers are a very personal choice, which reflects the wide variety of the different types that are available. They have to work in your room, they have to work with your amps and sources, and they have to play all your musical choices.

What speakers do you have now?
What speakers have you had in the past?
What will your next speakers be?

I don't know, as I am enjoying the current speakers so much. If I do change speakers, it will probably be for a new pair of Arke Audio speakers (Jason's own design).

I’ve always been a Quad ELS, and large Tannoy Dual Concentric speaker fan.

I’ve had tonnes of them, but currently use a smallish set of Tannoys in my second system, and a set of KLH Model 5 speaker (modern version) in my main system.

The KLH don’t quite match with my Leak Stereo 20, but wife loves the 70’s vibe that fits with the livingroom furniture/decor, so they’re staying.

As much as I’d love a set of ELS57’s in there, it’s never gonna happy. I’m good at picking my battles…. ;)

I am ashamed to admit it but I actually like the sound coming from my Slimline ported Dali Oberon 5's. This is a good thing as they also get considerable WAF.

I love the Quad ESL 54's, but would really love a pair of the HUGE Magneplanars from the late 80's, unfortunately space does not permit.

I've had (Still have) Celestion DL6's, and Mission Cyrus 780SE's, I also have a pair of Gale Silver monitors which to be frank put out an insane amount of bass for something so small.

I'm still looking at building something closed with zero/minimal crossover, just need to make sure it has WAF this time :(

Current
NVA Cube 1s
Second system NVA Cubettes

Previous
NVA Cube 3s, traded in for 1s which I was not sure would work in the room. They did!
Dynaudio, can't remember the model. They sounded good but we're blown away by Cube 3s.
Wharfdale sub. It was not required following the purchase of Cube 3s.
Wharfdale Diamond of what was the latest vintage.
Small Missions for the second system.
B&W, can't remember the model.
Heybrook HB1s. They were in use for over 20 years and I really liked them.
Celestial Ditton 15XR, my first hifi speakers.

You MUST get up to NVA HQ and hear our stacked ESL57s.

There are things they do in terms of transparency and timing that have never been bettered, ime.

My main 'daily drivers' are...

NVA Cube 1
Quad ESL57
I also have a pair of Stirling Broadcast 'nearly LS3/5a'...they look very cute and can sit on top of my vinyl cabinets

Lurking in various rooms, I can also admit to...

MK1.25 Rega Ela
Royd Eden
Monitor Audio R352

In the past...

Linn Kan
Epos ES14
Impulse H6
Harbeth P3ESR
Klipsch Heresy w/ sub

There are others that I won't include here because they came and went very quickly, or they were just a long, long time ago. Plus, I get to borrow / listen to quite a number of other speakers, either through friends in the trade or on the odd occasion when we take items in part exchange.

Of the other speakers that I've heard here recently, I've enjoyed the Proac D2 and the Wharfedale Linton Heritage 85.

In the future...

My dream would actually be a slightly larger room, then I would have stacked Quads, but I live in such a great community that I don't see me leaving my humble cottage.

Otherwise, I have a soft spot for the smaller of the Raidho speakers. I don't always like ribbon tweeters but the Raidhos that I heard at the Bristol show a couple of years ago sounded very good indeed. If a pair came along a the right price...

I also do love the look of the BBC style speakers, so if a nice pair of LS5/9 come along at some point, then I probably won't resist. I also like the looks and stature of the Harbeth M40 but they are too big for my room.

Different speakers vary more in their presentation than any other component, which makes them a personal choice. And, there is no perfect speaker, ime, so you have to find speakers that do a good job of the things that you most treasure - for me, that is transparency, timing, tonality - and whose weaknesses don't trigger you. That's not an easy ask, which our long lists of speakers testify to, and then you have to get them past the other half :ROFLMAO:

I had a period of no half decent hifi so I'll start with my modern journey back in to hifi.

My first modern speakers were dali spektor (2s I think) which were a nice listen at the time, they had their weaknesses coloured boxy sound when pushed due to the thin walls. I tried quad S2s after that which had much thicker walls and less colouration, good speakers, a little laid back but due to my square room the bass was too heavy and bunging the ports didn't sound right.
I think I had kralk audio TDB 2s after that which have been the most fun speakers I've listened to so far (although that may change...)

I tried wharfedale reva 2s which were far too fluffy and vague with bass and laid back in presentation, lots of missing detail.

I bought the monacor katana m1 kits and made open baffles, not bad but power hungry to sound well... Full range driver is clearly not full range so remodelled in basta, created a first order band pass on the full range driver and added dayton audio amt mini-8s crossed around 5.7k...
I had to make a lot of adjustments by ear and ended up with a third order on the tweeter.
I also added a notch filter to correct a peak. They're good but need more room than I can give them. I still have these.

I then tried some avi biggatrons, they needed refurbishing and I ended up putting new tweeters in them. They were pretty disappointing, maybe just a sound I don't like.

Then I had some kralk TDB 6s which were great but too big for my space and they would quickly overwhelm it although it's well acoustically treated.

I've learned that when it comes to boxes sealed and small drivers work best in my room so I bought some kralk BC30 MK2's with PAW stands. They have been described in reviews as being like the ls3/5a only much clearer. They have a very flat response and are ideal for me to use for monitoring purposes when I need to. I love them, they're not all boom and fizz or coloured but they're the best speakers I've owned, accurate, articulate and clean.

My square room acoustics give me crazy bass issues that bass lovers can only dream of but in an effort to get less room interaction I designed and made a pair of open baffle subs using bianco 15ob350 15'' drivers and wings.. Modelled in basta and again, some hours of tweeking to get right. They're amazingly clean sounding and because my room picks up the bottom end so much they go low. You don't notice them in most music but they go heavy when it's there in the music.

That brings us up to now. Recently I bought the ex demo cube 3s and they're now back with the upgraded tweeters.
If you've seen my picture in the 'view from your listening chair' thread you'll know I have 90% of a motorbike in pieces in front of my system and the speakers are pushed back against the wall so not ideal!

I will be doing some reviewing and hopefully detailed write up on the cube 3s but for now I have managed to pull them out a little bit and they're sounding good.
This will be good incentive to get the bike out the way 😅

I didn't really want to remodel my subs to integrate them with the cubes as the crossovers are in cases glued together suspiciously like an NVA case.

The cubes go deeper than kralks so I needed to drop the subs sensitivity a few dB and to save going into the crossover cases I modelled them in basta again without the wings which gave me a few dB drop in sensitivity and a slightly steeper drop-off from 50hz and below so pretty ideal for now.

Here's a pic I took before the cubes were sent back for the tweeter upgrade

In use:

Arcam One (original version).
These have a rich, refined tone very similar to the Spendor BC2.
Bought them in 1985.

NVA Cube2.
RD's prototype pair with acrylic casing. These have history!

NVA Cube3.
MDF cases, updated drivers.

Mission 760 (Doc Mods).
Tiny boxes, huge sound.

Audiolab Minax CD (Doc Mods)
Interesting but let down by the tweeters.

Wish I still had:

Magnepan MMG.
Planar with amazing imaging.

Wish I could afford:

Diapason Adamantes.
I've heard these and they are incredible.

I have three main systems but will just deal with my main one . Speakers are Quad ESL 57 speakers I wanted for years but was put off by the accepted so called truths . They will not work in small rooms , they have to be well away from the back wall , they do not go loud , they do not do bass . Seriously forget all that . However there are rules , first is finding the right amplifier to drive them . I have used an s300 which was excellent . But with the help of Mark and Paul I have the internals of M600 mono,s in some old P70 cases , these are just right and control the Quads with ease . Bass is superb , no there is nothing much below 30 hz but what there is matches the mid and treble . I play quitea bit of Grace Jones and Dub including Augustus Pablo and Denis Bouvel bass is not and issue . Things you also need is a pair of stands these need to raise the quads and tilt them forward . Item I would also say is essential is some form of isolation . I use Stack Auva feet and they work superbly . Other options are available but go for isolation not coupling . If any one is interested or even outraged then I will be taking my main system to the Maverick Show including the Quads so if you come along drop in have a listen ask for a piece of music . Then see if I have delivered or if my way of listening is nit for you . Both views are right and I promise I will not be upset be honest , I love my music now than ever and feel it sounds the best I have ever heard , but you might feel differently .

I reckon the 57s deserve their own thread...

I really must get around to fitting new bass units to my old JR149 MkIIs . . . Bought in 1981, they gave many years good service, but were pushed hard. I heard that Jm Rogers had done a MkIII, so contacted him to ask about modding mine, but he replied that he had promised the purchaser that they would be a "one-off" pair, so he was unable to do it.

For the last couple of decades I've been satisfied with an ex-demo pair of Wharfedale Pacifics. Perhaps not the most spectacular speakers, but they have served me very well, and they continue to sound great with the NVAs bi-amping them.
