NVA The Emotive Statement CD Player

Hi all,
I am so pleased I discovered this forum!
I recently acquired the above cd player from the estate of a deceased and, though a lifelong audiophile, know little about it.
There seems to be limited information on the internet too.
Does anyone have one of these players or is able to tell me about it?
The unit certainly looks swanky but I am yet to hear it as I’m waiting for the remote control to be found!
Any info gratefully appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

When we purchased the remaining assets of NVA, in 2019, there was no documentation surviving for this item. There wasn't much information even on the previous forum, that I could see.

I'm guessing that it was discontinued in the late 1990s. Does it play?

Hi Paul,
It needs the remote control which the widow of the late owner is sure she has but is still looking. She says it does.
Her late husband and owner was a renowned musician.
The cd drawer opens like butter!
I’m itching to have a listen!
I have an Audio Note player at present. I’m guessing it may be a close run thing..!

Peculiar that you are dependent on the remote control to have the unit play!

I have in the back of my mind that Richard Dunn once wrote that the transport section of the player was a modded NAD 502 (which in turn used a Sony KSS 210A, according to this list). The 502 was new in 1994, if I'm not mistaken.

I'd say the remote control on the front of the magazine looks much like a NAD 502 control with a different label (I used to have the NAD 5440 player with the control of the 502), so a guess would be that an old, cheap NAD control from eBay should also work.

I could be wrong in some or all of the above.

Hi Helge,
Thank you for all that very useful information.
Yes, it’s certainly peculiar, not to mention annoying! There are no controls, apart from the cd drawer opening button on the unit.
But your post gives me hope! It would be such a shame not to hear this beauty!
I’m not terribly confident about the original turning up!
Cheers,
Mike

Info received by email...

I acquired a T.E.S. cd player almost 20 years ago from a secondhand HiFi dealer in Peterborough which I still have. I contacted Richard in 2018 when the disc drawer started to fail, see my original email and his reply below. As Richard confirmed the donor unit was a NAD 502 I subsequently bought a couple of cheap NAD units complete with remotes as a potential source of spares for the T.E.S.

It may be of interest to the member/you that there is a comprehensive article on the T.E.S in the August 1994 edition of Hi Fi News (see attached). I could take a scan of the article if finding another copy proves too difficult.

I also recall Richard challenging forum members to identify the source of the orange button used to open the disc drawer on the T.E.S.; Richard stated that it was more usually used for the eyes of a teddy bear.

Thank you Paul and to everyone contributing to answering my question.
As advised, I bought a NAD 502 remote control unit from EBay and it works! At first I didn’t think so as there is nothing on the display ( which is strange?) l, but it works and plays very impressively. I have a Restek Concret cd player from the early 2000’s and I think the NVA edges it!
Thanks again!

Thanks for your guidance!🙏

Yes Theo, it’s sounds very good indeed. I have a Restek Concret cd player, (which was the best I’d heard at that early 2000’s time) in the same system and the NVA is better, not just different. It is more alive and involving without the normal cd listening fatigue .
I have no idea what the NVA cost at the time of production?
Unfortunately it does skip occasionally which is I guess repairable but it’s not frequent enough to warrant just yet.
Thanks again for the signpost!
