Holst 'The Planets'

This version by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra is very precious to me. I actually saw them perform this as an 11-year-old. My first Orchestral concert and it blew my mind.

Had this on a cassette for many years and finally tracked down the LP quite recently.

There are many recordings of the violin concertos, but its hard to look past this. Superb phrasing...

One of my favourite albums for the wonderful music and the playing.
Lute music by Silvius Weiss, a direct contemporary of JS Bach.

It's also my go to system test album.
Solo lute recorded in a church.
It pretty much encapsulates all I need to know about system performance. There's no deep bass, but that's a secondary thing for me.

I can hear straight away if a component or system can do what I want.

This is the set I have, which includes his rather decent Cello Sonata.

Once or twice per month, NAXOS very kindly sends me links to download one or other of their albums. Generally, there's a choice of three, and I chose this one this time around. Oddly, despite it being Chinese in origin, I seem to hear bits of typically British "Light" music from the likes of Albert Ketèlbey and Eric Coates. Maybe that's just me, though.
